RCSC Seminar Series on the Ocean: Spring/Fall 2023
Curated by Jen Telesca, Associate Professor of Environmental Governance and Politics
Listen to Dr. Jen Telesca introduce the seminar on the Ocean:
Seminar Description
The RCSC will introduce this spring and fall a series of seminar dedicated to the ocean and the life forms evoked in its wake, including our own. Curated by Dr. Jen Telesca, the seminars will explore what the blue humanities and social sciences know about the marine in ways that augment contributions from the physical sciences. On tap are such varied themes as oceanic imaginaries in Black religion (April 26); the contemporary preoccupation with the blue economy among the ruling class (May 15); and the phenology of marine life, or how the sea and its creatures tell time (June 8), among others. Together, these talks aim to encourage participants to discover the hidden but consequential practices unfolding beyond the vistas of everyday shores and, ultimately, reconnect to the ocean’s force and splendor.
