Invitation to Screening of “Brumadinho – Reports of a Continuing Crime”
Dear RCSC Network,
We are pleased to invite you to join the kick-off of our Documentary-Debate Series on Environmental (In)Justice, starting with the screening of “Brumadinho – Reports of a Continuing Crime” on Wednesday 26 March at 6PM in De Klinker, in the company of the movie's production team.
After a short introduction to the context, we will show the documentary in the original Portuguese with English subtitles. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to delve deeper into the issues raised in the film and to ask questions through a hybrid discussion with those affected in Brumadinho. Inputs from the film-makers will be translated from Portuguese to English.
About the documentary “Brumadinho – Reports of a Continuing Crime”
On January 25, 2019, the dam of a mine sludge retention basin in Brumadinho County, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, burst. Two hundred and seventy-two people were killed by the mud wave that was released. The mining company Vale S.A. and the Brazilian subsidiary of the German TÜV Süd, which had certified the dam in question in 2018, are being held responsible for the disaster, and legal proceedings have been ongoing against both companies. Brumadinho’s dam breach has become an international symbol of neglected corporate responsibility.
As a direct testimony from the residents of various communities in Brumadinho, the documentary shows how the urban community continues to suffer from ongoing human rights violations even five years after the disaster.
On the fifth anniversary of the disastrous crime in Brumadinho, the Coletivo das Pessoas Atingidas pelo Crime da Vale, together with the Região Episcopal Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Renser) and the Rede Igrejas e Mineração MG, launched the documentary “Brumadinho – Reports of an ongoing crime”. Those affected describe the permanent contamination of water, soil and air, revealing an unceasing process of insecurity and illness, both physical and psychological. Water shortages and the constant threat of contaminated mud in the rain and dust containing heavy metals in the dry season are just some of the challenges that constantly affect everyday life in communities. The impunity and the feeling of helplessness make the pain of the local people even worse, because to date none of the people or companies responsible have been held accountable - neither for the deaths of the 272 people nor for the ongoing threats to the lives of those affected. With this initiative, the Brumadinhos municipality would like to raise public awareness and push for more effective measures for due diligence and reparation.
