Resist to Educate
On January 30, 2025, a teacher from the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), in the eastern portion of the Brazilian Amazon, embarked with his students for a class on “Indigenous citizenship.” An “outdoor” class, in the entrance of the Tapajos National Forest (FLONA), next to highway BR 163. The highway had been recently occupied by indigenous peoples of various ethnicities, demanding the repeal of the Law 10.820/2024, which attacked Indigenous rights to in-person education in the state of Pará. The “outdoor” class thus had an educational and civic function, introducing the students to a real-world experience of forest and Indigenous citizenship. By taking part on this mobilization in defense of inclusive education, and attentive to the specificities of Indigenous peoples from the Amazon, the students had an important lesson on how to become agents of change, attentive to a sustainability transformation toward safeguarding the Amazon rainforest and its traditional peoples and communities. The documentary answers the question “What is the role of practices, models and instruments in sustainability transformations?”, by signaling how societal mobilizations and activism through education can be a powerful tool to promote sustainability transformations for the Brazilian Amazon and beyond. This documentary was a transdisciplinary collaboration between Indigenous peoples of various ethnicities in the Brazilian Amazon, a local NGO (Projeto Saúde e Alegria) and a federal university (UFOPA) in Brazil, as well as partners from the Horizon Europe project PLANET4B, and the TransAct research network of the Radboud University in the Netherlands. In all stages of this project, partners had an equal voice, respecting intersectional differences, in non-extractive collaboration, aligned with principles of epistemic justice.
