Decolonising the Curriculum Workshop, Wednesday 7 May, 7-9 PM, EOS 1.560
In what ways does colonialism influence our learning?
Date & Time: Wednesday, May 7, 2025, 19:00–21:00
Location: EOS 1.560
Have you ever stopped to think about whose voices dominate your textbooks? How many non-Western scientists have you learned about? The reality is that science, like many academic fields, has long been shaped by colonial perspectives, often prioritizing Western, European male voices while sidelining contributions from other regions and cultures. Join RGO and AGREEn for a transformative workshop that challenges these biases and explores how we can create a more inclusive and equitable academic curriculum! Through a combination of an engaging lecture, hands-on activities, and open discussion, we will:
Unpack colonial influences in curricula and scientific discourse
Explore how post-colonial nations address sustainability in innovative ways
Analyse real course materials to identify missing perspectives
Brainstorm actionable strategies to foster inclusivity in education
Before the session, participants are encouraged to submit a curriculum they’d like to examine—this will allow us to engage in meaningful analysis and discussions tailored to real-world examples.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with practical tools and strategies to advocate for a more representative and inclusive academic landscape. Whether you're a student, educator, or just passionate about decolonization in academia, this is an opportunity to be part of real change.
